As a frequent speaker in the Houston area, John Ferguson shares his compost and soil secrets. The owner of Nature's Way Resources' top organic pesticides are:

1. Insect and fungal problems: K-Neem Insecticide-Fungicide.
   One brand name for the oil derived from the neem tree, this product targets aphids, cabbage loopers, beetles, thrips, whiteflies and other insects. It's also a weapon for various fungal/mildew problems.
    
2. Wide range of insects: Insecticidal soap.
   There are several brand names that carry this biodegradable product. Considered safe for people and other mammals, it helps kill unwanted insects but may also harm beneficials, so carefully apply.
    
3. Ants, caterpillars, leafminers, thrips: Spinosad.
   Derived from the fermentation juices of a soil bacterium, this insecticide targets several pests but is said to not harm many beneficials.
    
4. Ants to whiteflies: Orange oil.
   The d-limonene in orange oil repels ants, fleas, roaches, mealybugs, whiteflies and other pests. Look for commercial products with orange oil.
    
5. Mosquitoes: Bacillus thuringiensis-israelensis.
   A biological pesticide, (Bt-i) dunks, doughnut-shaped dunks, are used in water features in your garden.
   Ferguson also uses Garlic Barrier and Mosquito Barrier, a stronger concentration, to discourage congregations of mosquitoes.
   "A couple ounces in a gallon of water sprayed around my doorways and patio area keeps mosquitos away for 2-3weeks depending on the weather," he says.
   Howard Garrett, aka the Dirt Doctor, is a Dallas-based landscape architect who researches and promotes natural organic gardening through publications and broadcasts. His top pesticides are:
    
6. Fire ant control: Nature's Guide Mound Drench or Garden-Ville Mound Drench with orange oil, compost tea and molasses.
   Dry molasses applied at 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet has eliminated fire ants completely in some cases, Garrett says.
    
7. Flea control: Beneficial nematodes.
   These microscopic soil dwellers also help combat fire ants, grubs, termites and other insect pests that have at least one in-ground lifecycle. Predator trichogramma wasps help elimiate flea larvae, too.
    
8. Crawling insects: Soil Mender Crawling insect Killer.
   This diatomaceous earth product targets roaches, spiders, crazy rasberry ants and other pests.
    
9. Mosquitoes: Dry garlic.
   Sprinkle on the ground and in potted plants at 1 pound per 1,000 square feet. It's available at large grocery stores and Asian markets.
   Other moquito weapons: Dr.T's Mosquito Repellent Granules (garlic, peppermint and lemongrass oil in a clay carrier) is effective or spray liquid garlic products such as Nature's Guide. Garrett usually makes both liquid and dry applications for best results.
    
10. Diseases: Plant Wash.
    This commercial product controls fungal diseases such as black spot on roses, early blight on tomatoes and powdery mildew on crape myrtles.
