History:
The Pineywoods Nursery sits on the site of the Lowery Nursery in Shenandoah, TX. In the early 1970’s, Lynn Lowery opened a nursery in Montgomery County, although he had many nurseries throughout his life, this was the only one to bear his name. The Lowery Nursery was a nursery in the truest sense. Lynn and his employees, who were well known in their own right, collected and grew many of the plants they sold. Many of the plants they grew were southern natives. Lynn has come to be known as father of the native plant movement and was a mentor and teacher to
many of the people in the native plant & nursery community. Many of his former employees are considered some of the most knowledgeable people in the native plant community, people such as Peter Loos, Will Fleming, Ted Doremus, Katie Ferguson, Mike & Patsy Anderson, Nolan Guillot, and many others. Many of them are now the teachers of a new generation.
By the 1980’s, Lynn sold the Lowery Nursery to Katie Ferguson who carried on the nursery until her death. The plant Katie Ruellia was found on the nursery by Nolan Guillot and it was named for her and is a very well known perennial in Texas. The nursery was abandoned after Katie’s death and the name was moved to Montgomery, Texas where a native plant nursery was located and ran by a native plant enthusiast until it closed in 2002. Although the Lowery Nursery is gone in name, Lynn’s love of plants, natives or not, is still shared by so many.
The Pineywoods Nursery was founded on the love of native and rare plants. We are working to bring many of these plants to the market so people can enjoy. We acquired the nursery in 2000 and have been cleaning up, reforesting (lost trees due to nature or man), and adding onto it. We will complete the last phase, which is behind the office, by the end of 2009. At this time we have over 200 different varieties and species in stock, and are continually adding to our availability.
